There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
